Talkeetna’s Main Street is a jumping off point for many tourist activities: dining, museums, shops, fishing, zip lining, flightseeing, river and railroad tours. Access beautiful the beautiful town by driving down Talkeetna Spur Road off the Parks Highway.
Talkeetna began as a trading post in 1896, and grew as a riverboat supply base following the Susitna River gold rush in 1910. The population boomed during construction of the Alaska Railroad, when Talkeetna was headquarters for the Alaska Engineering Commission in charge of rail- road construction, but declined following completion of the project. Talkeetna has several historic buildings and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
