The 271-acre Independence Mine State Historical Park includes several buildings and old mining machinery. Restoration of the buildings is ongoing. Drive up Hatcher Pass Road from the Glenn Highway to reach Independence Mine.

Park visitor center (wheelchair accessible) is housed in what was originally the mine manager’s home, built in 1939. Alaska Pacific Consolidated Mine Co., one of the largest gold producers in the Willow Creek mining district, oper- ated here from 1938 through 1941. The Gold Cord Mine buildings (private property) are visible on the hill above and to the north of Independence Mine. Gold Cord Lake Trail (1.7 miles round-trip) is a good hike for fam- ilies and all fitness levels.
