Big Lake is very popular for recreational boating, jet skiing and fishing.

Big Lake has been a resort destination for Alaskans since the 1940s. The area has grown in recent years—along with the rest of the Mat-Su Valley—and now has a number of residential subdivisions and the traffic that accompanies population growth.

Summer recreation at Big Lake includes swimming, camping, boating, fishing and jet skiing. Public access to the lake is provided by 2 state recreation sites: Big Lake North and Big Lake South. Winter sports include snowmachining, cross-country skiing and ice fishing.
