Road Reports on Driving Conditions in the North

Alert: Travel restrictions apply due to COVID-19 response. Canada/US and NWT border crossings are limited to essential travel only. Non-essential includes travel considered tourism or recreational in nature.

General road conditions are noted in the introduction to each highway in The MILEPOST®. Specific areas of concern are also called out in the logs. Current seasonal road conditions provided by government agencies may be obtained by referring to the following links:

Alaska road conditions. The Alaska DOT has a telephone- and web-based travel information system: 511 Travel in the Know. The 511 website provides current driving conditions, current and future road construction, closures, incidents and urgent reports, weather cameras (click that option box on the right hand side of the screen to see up-to-the-minute pictures of current highway conditions), winter driving tips, route summary reports and mountain pass locations. Phone 511, or visit their website. The National Weather Service also provides weather information.

Statewide updates for Very Difficult and/or Hazardous driving condition will be tweeted to the Twitter handle @alaska511. Travelers can follow either the statewide handle @alaska511 or the following area Twitter accounts preceded by ak511_ (for example ak511_Anchorage): Anchorage, Fairbanks, Southeast, Peninsula, MatSu, Tok, Tazlina, Valdez, Dalton, Denali.

Yukon road conditions: For year-round daily recorded updates, phone 867-456-7623 or go to Yukon Highways & Public Works Dept.’s Road Report. Reports are up-to-the-minute and include road construction. Also visit the Visitor Centres for reports and conditions.

British Columbia road conditions: General automated road information is available 24 hours-a-day at 800-550-4997 (cell *4997); or dial 511 in BC for road reports. For up to the second views of stretches of BC Highways, go to: BC web cams.

Northwest Territories road conditions: Phone 800-661-0750 or click on Highway & Ferry Conditions.

Alberta road conditions: Alberta Transportation provides the official road report. In Alberta dial 511 or outside of Alberta phone 855-391-9743 or go to the 511.alberta.ca and click on relevant features in the Map Legend, e.g. Closures, Incidents, Construction, Cameras, Weather Forecasts, etc.
