Tis the season for gift giving, and there’s no time to delay! Alaska is place the captures the hearts of many (ourselves included of course) and if you have one of those people in your life but have no idea what to gift them, we’ve got you covered. Here are five gift ideas for people who love Alaska.
The Alaska Box
This is the gift that keeps on giving. The Alaska Box is a subscription service that sends a box once each quarter packed with made-in-Alaska goods. That could mean food, art, home goods, jewelry, self-care items, and more. Each box is designed to highlight the season it’s delivered. If a year subscription is out of your gift price range, the company also allows order of a single box.
Alaska Native art
Art lovers will go nuts for some authentic Alaska Native art. If you’re buying in person, keep an eye out for the Silver Hand logo. If you’re buying online, try one of these reputable internet outlets:
- Sulianich Art Center, a space in Kotzebue for northwest Alaska artists to create and showcase their work.
- Sealaska Heritage Store, the regional nonprofit in southeast Alaska for Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures.
- Alutiiq Museum store, the museum for the indigenous people of Kodiak and coastal southcentral Alaska.
- Anchorage Museum store, navigate to the “Alaska Native Art” tab.
- Museum of the North store, Fairbanks-based museum with art from makers across the state.
Community Supported Fishery
Maybe you’ve heard of CSAs, or community supported agriculture. Farms using a CSA model sell their produce directly to consumers. Most have subscription services so you can get a box of produce delivered at regular intervals. Same thing here, except for Alaska fish. Check out businesses like 60 Degrees North and Pride of Bristol Bay. The gift recipient will know exactly where their Alaska salmon is coming from and be supporting Alaskan fishermen at the same time.
America the Beautiful Pass
For your outdoorsy friend. Especially if they live in Alaska or plan on spending an extended period of time there in the year ahead. These passes gives holders access to national parks, wildlife refuges, national forests and other federally managed recreation sites. In Alaska the America the Beautiful Pass can be used at places like the Begich Boggs Visitor Center for trips to Portage Glacier, the Chugach National Forest, and Mendenhall Glacier.
There’s also an Alaska State Parks pass that can be used for parking at most state parks.
Iditarod Insider subscription
The perfect gift idea for that Iditarod super fan who religiously follows the great Alaska race every year. Iditarod Insider subscribers have access to videos, GPS tracking, and other mushing news to stay in the know about the race.
The Milepost or Alaska magazine
A sixth idea; bonus! Shameless self promotion.. we know. But we’re proud of the work we put in to keep travelers informed about the latest happenings on Alaska’s roads and roads headed to Alaska. The 2022 edition will be available in March.
Our friends at Alaska magazine also do a stellar job of sharing diverse stories about the state and the people who live in it. So if the other gift ideas didn’t strike you, we think most any Alaska fan would be happy with some new reading material about the state they love.
